Hammer Attack Killer Receives Life Sentence for Manslaughter

Birmingham, United Kingdom – A man has been handed a life sentence after being found guilty of a violent hammer attack that resulted in the death of his friend. Gary O’Neill, 32, was arrested following a phone call made by bus passengers from Birmingham to Glasgow who overheard him discussing the attack. While cleared of murder by a jury at Birmingham Crown Court, O’Neill pleaded guilty to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility.

The incident took place at O’Neill’s Birmingham residence on February 27, 2022, where he assaulted his 30-year-old friend, Kenneth Ford. Despite efforts by paramedics and concerned friends who raised the alarm, Ford succumbed to his injuries at the scene. O’Neill’s account of events was corroborated by DNA evidence that linked him to the crime scene on the night of the attack.

Upon arriving in Glasgow, O’Neill was promptly apprehended by Police Scotland, still in possession of incriminating evidence such as blood-stained clothing and his bus ticket from Birmingham. Despite his refusal to cooperate during questioning, authorities were able to gather sufficient proof of his involvement in Ford’s tragic death.

In a sentencing delivered at Stafford Crown Court, O’Neill was informed that he must serve a minimum of 10 years for his actions. Detective Inspector Michelle Thurgood of West Midlands Police expressed hope that the verdict would bring some solace to Ford’s family, acknowledging the pain they have endured. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dire consequences of violent acts and the devastating impact they can have on individuals and their loved ones.
