Horror in Maryland retirement community when 80-year-old man murders his wife with a hammer and screwdriver

ROCKVILLE, MD – A man is facing first-degree murder charges after police allege he attacked and killed his wife with several household tools at their apartment in a Montgomery County senior living community over the weekend.

Vivian Stewart Nation, 80, was taken into custody Saturday evening after officers responded to a call at Leisure World, a retirement community designed for residents ages 55 and older. Authorities say the incident followed a heated argument between Nation and his wife, Beverly Fletcher, 78, regarding an issue related to Nation’s medical care.

Responding officers were led by security staff to the couple’s unit on North Leisure World Boulevard, where they discovered Fletcher’s body. Investigators said she had sustained numerous stab wounds as well as injuries consistent with blunt force trauma. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to court documents, detectives recovered a knife and screwdriver bearing traces of suspected blood from the third-floor apartment. They also found a hammer, which authorities believe may have been used in the assault.

Montgomery County police said the couple had been married for 13 years, with no previous reports of domestic disturbances at the address. The investigation suggests the deadly confrontation erupted after a dispute over Nation’s relationship with his physician.

Nation was brought before a judge Monday for a bond hearing. During proceedings, the court ordered Nation to undergo a mental health evaluation after indications of possible cognitive impairment surfaced. Officials noted Nation may have experienced several strokes prior to the fatal incident.

Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy said there are signs that cognitive decline may have played a role, citing feedback from individuals who interacted with Nation and medical history reports. The judge’s order aims to assess Nation’s competency for trial.

Family members on both sides appeared deeply affected, describing close ties between the two families. According to those familiar with the couple, relationships had been cordial and supportive for years.

Nation remains in custody pending the results of the court-ordered mental health evaluation. He is scheduled to appear in court again next week for an update on his condition.

Authorities have not indicated any ongoing threat to the Leisure World community and say the investigation is continuing. Police are urging anyone with further information about the case to come forward.
