Hydroplaning and Speed Blamed for Deadly Brazos Valley Crashes During Rainfall

BRENHAM, Texas – Deadly crashes in the Brazos Valley on Monday were attributed by DPS troopers to driving too fast on wet roads and hydroplaning, contributing to two fatal accidents.

One of the crashes occurred west of Brenham on Highway 290 and Sunset Road, resulting in the death of 59-year-old Anita Goodrich of Brenham, the SUV’s driver. An unidentified passenger also died in the collision with a semi-truck. Meanwhile, in Grimes County, a 26-year-old man from Spring, Stephen Oderinde, died after his car struck a concrete culvert, overturned, and became submerged in water on Highway 249 near county road 304.

Sgt. Justin Ruiz of the Department of Public Safety stated that worn-out tires and speed on rain-covered highways were contributing factors to the fatal crashes. He urged drivers to maintain more distance from other vehicles, keep headlights on at all times, avoid using cruise control, refrain from driving through flooded highways, and stay informed about roadway and weather conditions.

Ruiz’s warnings emphasize the importance of responsible driving, especially during adverse weather conditions. It is crucial for drivers to take precautions and adapt their behavior to ensure their safety and the safety of others on the road. These tragic accidents serve as a reminder of the potential dangers of driving in hazardous conditions. As such, it is essential for drivers to exercise caution and be mindful of their surroundings while on the road.
