Illinoise: A Breathtaking Fusion of Music and Dance Premieres in New York City

New York City, NY – A new dance-theater production, “Illinoise,” choreographed by Justin Peck and inspired by Sufjan Stevens’ album of the same name, has made its premiere at the Park Avenue Armory. The show, which features a story devised by Peck and playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury, has gained attention for its emotional depth and unique interpretation of Stevens’ music.

Drawing from Stevens’ eclectic music style, which spans genres from folk rock to experimental, the production weaves together a loose narrative centered around a group of young people sharing stories from their lives. Set against a backdrop of projected song titles and lyrics, the dancers move to Timo Andres’ arrangements of the music with fluidity and emotional expressiveness.

Despite the challenging nature of Stevens’ music, Peck’s choreography incorporates a variety of styles including modern, ballet, jazz, and tap, showcasing the versatility of the dancers. The production, featuring three singer/musicians and an 11-piece band, creates a visually stunning and musically captivating experience for the audience.

While “Illinoise” may not be easily accessible to all viewers and may not lend itself well to a Broadway transfer, the production succeeds in transporting audiences through its combination of music, choreography, and exceptional dancing. With its limited engagement at the Park Avenue Armory, “Illinoise” promises to leave a lasting impression on those who experience its unique blend of storytelling and performance art.

For those interested in witnessing this innovative production, “Illinoise” is set to run through March 26 at the Park Avenue Armory. Tickets and further information can be found on the Armory’s website.
