Investigation Underway at Naja Isabelle Group Home After Deaths of Young Residents in Nunavut

CHESTERFIELD INLET, Nunavut – Multiple investigations are currently underway at the Naja Isabelle group home after two young residents tragically died in hospital. The Nunavut Minister of Family Services, Margaret Nakashuk, disclosed that three people were hospitalized due to “critical incidents” at the care home, resulting in two deaths. The RCMP and the Nunavut Coroner’s office are conducting investigations into these tragic events. The Minister has hired an external team to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the matter, and steps are being taken to relocate the remaining patients from the home.

The Naja Isabelle Home, which cares for children and adults under the age of 40 with specialized medical needs from across Nunavut, is operated by the Pimakslirvik Corporation. The CEO of the corporation expressed surprise at the Minister’s statements and stated that they had not been given the opportunity to review the investigation findings to justify the Minister’s statement.

The RCMP released a statement saying it is assisting with the investigation at the request of the territorial government. The Nunavut government has also notified the Representative for Children and Youth, and an outside legal team has been hired to investigate the quality of care provided at the facility. There have been concerns regarding the timely reporting of critical injuries and deaths, with the territory taking roughly two months to notify the Representative for Children and Youth of one of the residents’ deaths.

It’s deeply concerning that circumstances in the group home have raised serious concerns. The involvement of the RCMP implies potential criminal charges, highlighting the gravity of the situation. The involvement of external investigative teams and government-appointed watchdogs reinforces the seriousness with which these incidents are being treated, showcasing the commitment to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice for those affected.

This unfortunate series of events has sparked a broader conversation about the care provided in group homes and the need for transparency and accountability in reporting critical incidents. As the investigations unfold, it is crucial for the community and the public at large to receive regular updates and transparent communication about the findings and any resulting actions taken. The urgency of this matter cannot be overstated, and it is essential for the authorities to handle this situation with the utmost care and attention.
