Iowa Principal Who Acted Heroically Dies After Perry High School Shooting

PERRY, Iowa – An Iowa high school principal, Dan Marburger, who heroically intervened during a deadly shooting at Perry High School, has succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the attack. His wife, Elizabeth Marburger, confirmed his passing, stating that he fought hard for 10 days before ultimately losing his battle on January 14, 2024.

The tragic event occurred on January 4, 2024, when a 17-year-old student opened fire at the school near Des Moines. One sixth-grade student was killed, and seven others, including Principal Dan Marburger, were injured in the shooting. Marburger’s selfless actions during the attack have been widely praised, with his daughter, Claire Marburger, stating that he tried to approach and distract the shooter to help students escape from the cafeteria.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety commended Marburger for his selfless bravery, acknowledging that he placed himself in harm’s way to protect his students. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds also expressed her condolences, ordering flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Marburger’s heroic sacrifice.

Marburger, who had been working in schools in Perry, Iowa for at least 25 years, is remembered for his selfless and courageous actions.
