Kansas Deputy Uncovers Dozens of Child Snapchat Victims By Crime Solving Hero

Topeka, Kansas – A Wabaunsee County sheriff’s deputy is being celebrated for his investigative work that led to the apprehension of a child sex predator. The deputy, Cpl. Jon Sumner, discovered that an underage girl from Alma was being solicited for sex on Snapchat. This discovery led to the revelation that the man, identified as 25-year-old Miles McGough, had been harassing dozens of underage girls, including one whom he was convicted of raping.

The investigation began in November 2022, when Sumner met with a local couple whose daughter was the target of the online predator. Sumner’s investigation eventually led to the identification of McGough and his residence in Castlerock, Colorado. He shared this information and his findings with the Castlerock Colorado Police Department to aid in the investigation efforts. Subsequently, the Colorado Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) team uncovered additional information that linked McGough to 24 more underage girls.

Further investigation revealed that McGough had traveled to Florida to meet with an underage girl he had been grooming online for months. He was arrested in March 2023 in Douglas County, Colorado. McGough was sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison in December 2023 after pleading guilty to enticing a minor to engage in criminal sexual activity. He was also ordered to pay a $25,000 fine and received 15 years of supervised release after serving his time in prison.

The Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office disclosed that McGough is also facing 22 felony sex crime charges in Colorado, which could extend his stay in prison for an additional 15-20 years after his federal sentence. The office also commended Cpl. Jon Sumner for his exceptional investigative work and highlighted his dedication to bringing child predators to justice.
