Kidnapping and Torture Florida Man Charged: Sterling Heights Case Heat Up

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Michigan – Renado Gary Coleman, a Florida man suspected in the violent kidnapping and torture of a Sterling Heights man outside of a Macomb County gym, has been charged in the case, according to police. Coleman, 38, was taken into custody in Tampa and extradited to Shelby Township, where the alleged attack took place. He was arraigned in 41A District Court on 12 felony counts, including home invasion and armed robbery. He is being held in the Macomb County Jail on a $5 million cash-only bond.

Authorities previously charged two other men from Tampa in the case and are looking for at least one more suspect. The alleged incident took place on October 23, 2023, when a 24-year-old man was carjacked at gunpoint by four suspects outside of a gym, restrained in his own pickup truck, tortured, and driven to his house, where the suspects entered the residence. The victim was eventually rescued by police, but some suspects managed to escape.

The investigation, which included search warrants and interviews, led detectives to the Tampa area where several arrests have been made. The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office authorized 12 felonies against Coleman, including carjacking, armed robbery, torture, unlawful imprisonment, first-degree home invasion, and conspiracy charges.

Angel Pantoja, one of the previously charged suspects, is facing multiple charges including carjacking, armed robbery, torture, unlawful imprisonment, and conspiracy to commit first-degree home invasion. A probable cause conference for Pantoja is scheduled for January 17, in front of Judge Douglas Shepherd.

Shelby Township police expressed their gratitude to the Tampa Bay Police Department, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, and the ATF Task Force for their continued assistance in the case. The case remains under investigation, and authorities believe there may still be at least one more suspect at large.
