Knoxville man shoots and stabs his girlfriend then murders her best friend because she witnessed it

KNOXVILLE, TN – A Tennessee man will spend the remainder of his life behind bars after admitting to killing his girlfriend and her friend in a gruesome double homicide last May.

Jair Romario Martin, 28, pleaded guilty in Knox County court to two counts of first-degree murder, as well as additional charges of aggravated kidnapping, criminal impersonation, and evading arrest, according to prosecutors. On Monday, a judge handed down a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The case stems from a violent episode on May 13, 2023. Authorities say Madison Johnson, 21, was on a video call with her mother when she told her Martin was acting aggressively and refusing to let her leave by barricading the door. Her mother contacted 911 after witnessing Martin with a firearm during the call.

During the emergency call, Martin could be heard making threats. Madison pleaded for him to stop pointing the gun, but Martin responded by declaring his murderous intent and then fired several shots at her. Heidi Johnson, 20, a friend and roommate, shouted in horror before Martin turned the gun on her and opened fire, according to officials.

Investigators said Martin discharged the weapon approximately ten times before fleeing the scene. As responding officers arrived at the residence, they discovered both women dead from gunshot wounds. Authorities noted that Madison Johnson had also suffered fatal wounds from a carving fork found lodged in her head.

In the moments after the slayings, a police officer encountered Martin walking nearby. However, since he had not yet been identified as the suspect and appeared calm, he was not immediately detained. Martin was arrested several days later.

At Martin’s sentencing, prosecutors played an 11-minute surveillance recording that captured both the altercation and the fatal gunshots, providing the court with a chilling account of the violence. Family members of the victims reacted emotionally, with some leaving the courtroom as the footage played.

A detective who interviewed Martin testified that he claimed to have blacked out during the shootings and accused the victims of stealing drugs from him.

Family members gave tearful statements during the hearing, describing their anguish and the lasting impact of the crime. Heidi Johnson’s mother told the court she had considered Martin, a family friend before the tragedy. Madison Johnson’s mother said her daughter’s death could have been prevented if Martin had simply allowed her to leave.

During sentencing, the judge condemned Martin’s actions, calling them heinous and marked by rage, referencing both the shooting and the additional stabbing injuries inflicted on Madison Johnson. The judge said the life sentence reflected the gravity of the crimes and the permanent loss suffered by the victims’ families.

Martin will serve his sentence without the chance of parole, closing a harrowing chapter in the Knoxville community.
