NEW ORLEANS — A tragic shooting in a parking lot has claimed the life of a beloved local father while he was picking up his young son from daycare. Carl Morgan, 37, was fatally shot in an apparent carjacking near the Abeona House Child Discovery Center on Canal Street on Tuesday evening.
Morgan, known for his culinary talent as a sous chef at Brennan’s Restaurant, was remembered by friends and colleagues as a dedicated father and a passionate professional. Christian Pendleton, the general manager at Brennan’s, expressed the deep sorrow the restaurant community is feeling, noting, “Everyone is hurt and shocked. He was not just a talented cook, but a loving father.”
Witnesses reported that the shooting occurred around 5:15 p.m. as Morgan was attending to his son, underscoring the shocking nature of the violence. According to New Orleans police, the accused shooter, identified as 21-year-old Raymond Wells, was found later that evening on Interstate 10 with a serious head injury. Authorities are investigating whether his wound was self-inflicted or sustained during the commission of the crime.
New Orleans Police Superintendent Nicholas Gernon stated that before targeting Morgan, Wells had allegedly discharged his weapon nearby, prompting an investigation into his movements prior to the shooting. “It appears he was seeking another target before encountering our victim,” Gernon said.
Morgan’s partner expressed profound grief over the loss, highlighting the lasting impact on their young son who will now grow up without his father. “A man lost his life, and a child lost his father. This senseless act has robbed us all of a vibrant light in the city,” remarked Shawn Anglim, pastor at First Grace United Methodist Church, located adjacent to the daycare. Anglim noted that a teacher at the daycare promptly moved all children indoors upon hearing the gunfire, potentially preventing further tragedy.
Colleagues recall Morgan as a leader in the kitchen who was not only passionate about his work but also compassionate toward others. He was particularly proud of his contributions to the Fried Chicken Festival, an event that celebrates culinary talent in the area. To honor his legacy, Brennan’s will serve his signature fried chicken sandwich at the festival this weekend, with all proceeds going to support Morgan’s family.
Pendleton reflected on the best way to celebrate a chef’s life, emphasizing the importance of community, food, and joy. “There’s no greater tribute than to cook their food and see the happiness it brings to people,” he said.
