TBILISI, Georgia — A violent incident unfolded near Metekhi Bridge on Wednesday night, leaving a prominent youth opposition leader injured just ahead of the country’s local elections. Igor Narmania, who serves as the deputy chairman of the United National Movement (UNM) and leads its youth wing, was hospitalized after the clash, highlighting the tense political atmosphere as citizens prepared to cast their votes.
The confrontation allegedly erupted when Narmania and over ten supporters engaged in a dispute with two individuals defending a female church employee. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, what began as a verbal disagreement quickly escalated into violence, resulting in multiple injuries on both sides.
In the aftermath, authorities confirmed that most individuals involved have been identified and an investigation is being pursued under Article 126 of Georgia’s criminal code, which addresses group violence. Police have described the investigation process as “intensive” as they seek to uncover the full details of the event.
Narmania suffered head injuries during the altercation and was promptly transported to a medical facility for treatment. In addition, a 15-year-old boy was also reported injured and required hospitalization.
