Massachusetts Man Charged with Murder of Pregnant Girlfriend After Her Remains Found

REHOBOTH, Mass. — A 22-year-old man has been charged with murdering his pregnant girlfriend, whose body was discovered buried on his property. Gregory Groom faces a murder charge in connection with the death of 18-year-old Kylee Monteiro, who was reported missing earlier this month.

Monteiro was 11 weeks pregnant when she vanished. Family members said she had expressed concerns about her safety shortly before her disappearance. Authorities located her remains in a grave on Groom’s grandparents’ property on Tuesday evening.

Family friend Kira Schofield shared her grief, emphasizing Monteiro’s loving nature and the deep bond she had with the community. “She was so caring,” Schofield said. Monteiro’s sister, Faith, also reflected on the tragic loss, saying she would never have the chance to say goodbye to her sibling.

In court proceedings on Wednesday, prosecutors revealed that Groom was the first to inform law enforcement of Monteiro’s disappearance, stating she had left his home after an argument on August 8. He claimed she was looking for a place to stay when their dispute escalated.

As the investigation progressed, Groom reportedly confessed to pushing Monteiro during an altercation on August 6, causing her to fall and hit her head. He is also accused of knocking her phone out of her hand, which led to prior charges of domestic assault and battery.

Monteiro had allegedly sent a distressing message to her sister, indicating the nature of the dispute, saying that she had been thrown on the ground and strangled. With the message concluding, “My phone’s at 4 percent if I die, it was Greg,” the family’s fears intensified.

Following indications from the police that they would search his property, Groom reportedly admitted to fatally stabbing Monteiro multiple times with a kitchen knife during their argument. He also provided information about where he had buried her body, which was found approximately 20 yards from a shed where the confrontation took place, buried about five feet underground.

At his arraignment, Groom pleaded not guilty to the murder charge. He has been ordered to remain in custody without bail as the case unfolds. The next hearing in the case is planned for September 10.
