Multi-Vehicle Collision in Co Meath Claims Two Lives and Leaves Dozens Injured

GORMANSTON, Ireland — A tragic early morning collision involving a bus, truck, and car left two men dead and multiple injuries in Co. Meath, sending shockwaves through the local community. The accident occurred around 6:30 a.m. on the R132 road in Gormanston, resulting in at least 12 people requiring medical attention.

The victims included a male bus driver in his 50s and a truck driver in his 40s, both of whom were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car, a woman in her 40s, sustained severe injuries and was transported to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin for treatment. A teenage passenger in her group was initially taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda before being moved to Temple Street Children’s Hospital, where her condition remains serious.

Local emergency services reported that a total of ten other individuals were hospitalized with injuries that are not life-threatening. The incident occurred near the location of the now-closed Huntsman pub, a familiar landmark in the area. In a statement released by Bus Éireann, the company expressed its sorrow over the loss of one of its drivers and conveyed condolences to the families of the deceased.

Jean O’Sullivan, chief executive of Bus Éireann, described the incident as devastating. “Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and colleagues of our Bus Éireann driver who has sadly lost his life, and with the family and friends of the driver of the other vehicle who also passed away,” she said. O’Sullivan assured that the organization will support those affected and cooperate with authorities during the investigation.

Authorities closed the R132 for much of the day while forensic investigators examined the scene. The road reopened Monday evening once the wreckage had been cleared. Gardaí are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or possesses dashcam footage from the area between 5:45 a.m. and 6:45 a.m. to come forward.

This incident marks the second deadliest crash in the region within a short time, following a recent accident in Co. Louth where five young individuals lost their lives. Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan extended his sympathies to the families affected, emphasizing the need for increased road safety awareness, particularly as the holiday season approaches.

Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien also expressed his condolences, calling the news deeply troubling. “At this time, my thoughts and prayers are with the families and communities of those involved,” he said. Local representatives, including Sinn Féin TD Darren O’Rourke, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the shock felt in the community.

Gormanston residents have voiced concerns about road safety, noting that the R132 is a busy corridor utilized by many commuters. Sharon Tolan, a Fine Gael councillor, remarked on the impact of the crash, stating that it has shocked the community deeply. “It’s a tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with their families,” she said.

Community members expressed their sorrow and called attention to ongoing safety issues on the road, where previous accidents have occurred. Peter Brady, from the Gormanston Community Association, lamented the tragic losses, emphasizing the vital public service provided by the bus routes in the area. He described the crash as a “tragedy beyond comprehension.”

As investigations continue, authorities reported that road fatalities in Ireland this year have reached 161, an increase from the same period last year. Drivers have been identified as the highest demographic among those fatalities. The necessity for effective road safety measures remains critical as the community seeks to come to terms with this latest tragedy.
