Murder-suicide tragedy: North Carolina teen who recited MLK speeches killed by father

Fayetteville, North Carolina – A tragic incident has left the community in shock as 12-year-old Jerel McGeachy, known for his moving recitations of Martin Luther King Jr. speeches, was found dead in a double murder-suicide in the Kansas City area.

Authorities discovered the bodies of Jerel McGeachy, his father, Jerel McGeachy Sr., and his mother, Dominique McGeachy, inside their home following a welfare check. Investigators believe that Jerel McGeachy Sr. fatally shot his wife and son before taking his own life.

Before relocating to the Midwest, Jerel McGeachy captivated audiences across North Carolina with his eloquent delivery of historical speeches. Alysse Stewart, Program Director and Personality at Magic 106.9, remembers him fondly and highlighted his impact on the community.

In 2022, McGeachy won a student leadership contest at a radio station in Hope Mills, where the family previously resided. The tragedy has left many in disbelief, especially in light of Jerel McGeachy Sr.’s past heroism as a former Spring Lake police officer who once saved a neighbor’s life.

Both parents were employed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, with Dominique working as a nurse. The family had recently experienced the loss of the McGeachy’s paternal grandmother, adding another layer of tragedy to the situation.

As the community grapples with the shock of the events, family members in Raeford declined to comment at this time. The devastating loss of Jerel McGeachy, a bright young talent with a promising future, has left many questioning how such a tragedy could unfold within their midst.
