Night: Wyoming Driver Dies After High-Speed Crash Near Alpine

ALPINE, Wyo. — A nighttime crash claimed the life of a 47-year-old man early Friday morning, marking a tragic milestone as the 75th fatality on Wyoming roads this year. The driver, identified as Theodore Filcher, lost control of his Toyota 4Runner while navigating a winding section of U.S. Highway 26 near Alpine.

The accident occurred around 2:50 a.m. at mile marker 121.5. According to the Wyoming Department of Transportation, Filcher’s vehicle failed to make a right turn, veering off the road’s northbound shoulder. Witnesses reported that the SUV began sliding sideways for approximately 300 feet before rolling onto its side.

In a devastating sequence of events, the vehicle flipped multiple times before colliding with a large tree. It subsequently bounced back toward the highway before coming to a rest on the shoulder. Investigators noted that Filcher was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

While the incident happened in the middle of the night, authorities have not indicated that environmental conditions contributed to the accident. Speed is believed to be a potential factor. The Wyoming Highway Patrol continues to investigate the specifics surrounding the crash.

This incident underscores ongoing concerns about road safety in Wyoming, where fatal crashes have reached alarming levels. The current year’s fatalities are only 11 shy of the total recorded in 2023, which stands as one of the deadliest years in recent history.

As the state grapples with these statistics, officials urge drivers to prioritize safety by adhering to speed limits and wearing seatbelts, emphasizing the importance of taking precautions behind the wheel. The loss of life is a stark reminder of the dangers present on the roads, especially during late-night travel.
