Austell, Georgia — A North Carolina man faces multiple felony charges after allegedly assaulting three law enforcement officers during a violent confrontation at the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) headquarters on Monday morning.
The incident began around 11:30 a.m. as the suspect, identified as Alex Ross, entered the facility to inquire about his certification status. Ross, whose history with law enforcement includes previous roles as a jailer and deputy sheriff, became disruptive, leading to the escalation of the situation.
According to Austell Police, Ross had already been known to POST personnel, who brought him into the office to address his concerns. However, the discussion quickly turned hostile, prompting officers to intervene after hearing a commotion from a floor above. They rushed to the second floor, where a struggle was underway.
Lt. Edward Cason of the Austell Police reported that when officers arrived, they encountered multiple POST employees attempting to restrain Ross. One investigator had drawn her weapon, and shouts of “let go of her gun” filled the hallway. Witness accounts indicated that Ross had punched all three women involved in the struggle, injuring one officer seriously enough to break her jaw.
“It’s unclear what his intentions were, but it was evident that the situation could have escalated further if not for the quick response of our officers,” Cason stated. Several officers had to subdue Ross physically, managing to separate him from the investigator he was grappling with.
Fortunately, all three officers are expected to recover from their injuries, though they sustained serious blows during the encounter. The POST facility, responsible for establishing training and certification standards for law enforcement across Georgia, has reassured the public that it is cooperating fully with local authorities as an investigation proceeds.
In a statement, POST Executive Director Chris Harvey expressed gratitude for the swift actions of both POST personnel and Austell officers. He noted that while details remain limited due to the active investigation, efforts are underway to ensure that Ross is held accountable for his violent actions.
Currently, Ross, who resided in Hayesville, North Carolina, faces several serious charges, including felony violations of his oath as a public officer and aggravated battery. His record shows a troubled history in law enforcement that dates back to 2019, with his POST certification now suspended as a result of the incident.
Law enforcement officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Ross’s actions, raising questions about the motivations behind such violence in a facility dedicated to the professional development of law enforcement.
