Uyo, Nigeria — A passenger aboard an Ibom Air flight has been charged and incarcerated following a violent clash with airline crew members. Comfort Emmanson, who was on a flight from Uyo to Lagos, faces serious allegations of assault after reportedly disregarding safety regulations.
Tunde Moshood, a media aide to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, confirmed the incident through a social media post on Monday. He cautioned travelers to adhere strictly to safety protocols while flying, highlighting the need for vigilance in the skies.
Emmanson’s altercation began on August 10, before takeoff, when she allegedly ignored repeated requests to power off her mobile device, a reminder of the importance of in-flight regulations. Initial attempts to manage the situation were made by the crew and a fellow passenger, but the conflict escalated once the flight arrived in Lagos.
Witnesses say that upon disembarking, Emmanson confronted the Purser, who had initially asked her to turn off her phone. Reports indicate that she physically assaulted the crew member, which included stepping on her and tearing her wig, as well as causing damage to personal items such as glasses and footwear.
Furthermore, Emmanson is accused of attempting to remove a fire extinguisher from the aircraft, a dangerous act that could have endangered the flight’s equipment and posed a safety risk. The incident intensified when she allegedly assaulted airport security personnel and a ground supervisor as she was being restrained.
Following the melee, Emmanson was handed over to security forces at the airport, where she was subsequently transferred to local police for further investigation. This led to her arraignment and remand in custody.
In response to the incident, Ibom Air has issued a lifetime ban on Emmanson from its flights and has submitted a comprehensive report detailing the events surrounding the altercation to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority. The airline’s swift actions underscore the zero-tolerance policy for unruly behavior onboard flights, emphasizing safety for all passengers and crew members.
