Phoenix, AZ — A disturbing incident unfolded in Phoenix early Monday when a seemingly routine interaction led to a violent attack. At approximately 1 a.m., a 39-year-old man, Daniel Lanks, allegedly assaulted another man who had merely greeted him on the street.
The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed for his safety, encountered Lanks while walking. After the victim casually asked Lanks how he was doing, Lanks reportedly attacked him from behind, culminating in a particularly gruesome act where he forcibly removed the victim’s right eyeball from its socket.
Authorities responded to a distress call, made by the victim’s girlfriend after the victim managed to return home despite his injuries. Upon arriving, first responders were met with the horrific sight of the victim clutching a towel to his face, which was bloodied and disfigured.
Further examination at the scene revealed that the victim not only suffered the loss of an eyeball but also sustained a fractured jaw.
Later that day, police located and arrested Lanks, who had been released from jail only two days prior to this incident. He was booked into the Maricopa County jail on charges of felony aggravated assault and is being held on a $500,000 cash bond.
The impact of the attack on the victim is profound and irreversible. He shared with authorities that the loss of his eye and the injury to his jaw will drastically alter his life, casting doubt on his ability to work or perform daily activities that many take for granted.
This incident highlights potential gaps in the system concerning the monitoring and rehabilitation of recently released offenders. It also raises concerns about public safety and the randomness of unprovoked attacks in typically safe environments.
The community and local authorities must now reflect on and address the underlying issues that allow such violent acts to occur, especially considering the attacker’s recent release from incarceration. The investigation continues as those involved seek justice and recovery from a seemingly random and life-altering event.
