Raccoon Rescued from Severe Burns After Alleged Animal Cruelty in Quincy, Massachusetts

QUINCY, Massachusetts – A raccoon is in critical condition with severe burns after allegedly being placed on top of an outdoor fire by a 63-year-old Quincy man. The man, Andrew Chieu, pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of animal cruelty and was released on personal recognizance. The incident took place last weekend, and the injured raccoon was brought to the New England Wildlife Center in South Weymouth for treatment.

According to the center, the raccoon suffered severe and “extremely painful” burns to its stomach, back, and paws. The animal is currently being stabilized with pain medications, antibiotics, fluids, and nutritional support, and despite the long road to recovery, the center is optimistic about the raccoon’s chances.

Almost all of the raccoon’s fur was burned off or singed in the fire, making its recovery even more challenging. However, the center emphasized that the raccoon’s attitude, appetite, and bright mentation show that it still has a good quality of life and is responding well to treatment.

Raccoons play a crucial role in Massachusetts’s urban and suburban ecosystems by helping to control rodent and insect populations and clearing decaying carrion and backyard vegetation. The New England Wildlife Center highlighted the importance of co-existing with these creatures and provided key safety tips for individuals who encounter raccoons in their neighborhoods.

The injured raccoon’s case sheds light on the dangers of animal cruelty and the impact it can have on wildlife. As the raccoon continues its recovery, the hope is that it will serve as a reminder of the need to protect and respect all living beings.
