Security Measures Planned for Prague’s Charles University After Mass Shooting

PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC – In response to a tragic mass shooting at the Faculty of Arts last month, which resulted in the death of 14 individuals, Charles University in Prague is taking steps to enhance security measures across its buildings. The university’s rector, Milena Králíčková, announced that a list of tailored security measures will be provided to the deans of individual faculties to ensure a safer environment for students and staff.

The university recently held a crisis meeting to address the coordination of activities for the ‘Month for the Faculty’ event, aimed at restoring academic life to the Faculty of Arts building. In light of the shooting, plans for the summer semester at the Faculty of Arts were also discussed, with the possibility of holding classes in alternative premises or online.

One of the main topics of discussion at the meeting was the planning of a commemorative procession called the Transmission of Light, in which students will carry the light from the rector’s office to the faculty building. This symbolic gesture aims to embrace the Faculty of Arts building in a spirit of remembrance and solidarity.

Additionally, the university is considering the implementation of various security measures, including card access, with a focus on the individual needs of each faculty. The collection of candles for memorial sites is also being organized with a sensitive approach, expected to take place on January 4th.

As the university prepares for the summer semester, the focus remains on implementing necessary security measures while commemorating the lives lost in the tragic shooting. It is a time of reflection and resilience for the university community as they strive to create a safe and supportive environment for all.
