Shooting at SC State University Leads to Murder Charge Against 18-Year-Old

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — An 18-year-old has been charged with murder following a deadly shooting at South Carolina State University, which left two individuals dead and another injured during Valentine’s Day weekend.

Khamanti Lytrel Kennedy faces the serious charge after the incident that occurred on February 12 at the university’s Hugine Suites housing complex. Authorities from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) responded to reports of gunfire, discovering that three people had been shot inside a room during what appeared to be a drug-related event.

The victims were identified as 19-year-old Henry L. Crittington and 18-year-old Terrell Thomas, both of whom succumbed to their injuries. A third victim is recovering in the hospital. According to investigators, the confrontation escalated over a marijuana transaction, which ultimately led to the shooting.

Witnesses captured Kennedy on surveillance footage leaving the crime scene on foot shortly after the shooting. Records show he had arrived on campus with three companions, and they were seen entering the housing complex together. Moments later, they exited the building and retrieved items from Kennedy’s vehicle, raising questions about the intentions surrounding their visit.

Kennedy is currently held at the Orangeburg County Detention Center as the investigation continues. University officials have since announced enhanced safety protocols for entering and exiting campus, reflecting a heightened focus on student safety in the aftermath of the shooting.

SLED is still actively investigating the incident and is reaching out to the public for assistance. Individuals with information can contact SLED via email or phone to provide tips, as authorities work to piece together the events that led to this tragic incident. The safety of students remains a top priority for university administration as they navigate the aftermath of this unsettling crime.
