Shooting Death of Acquitted Man Investigated in Pakistan After 2013 Killing of Accused Indian Spy

LAHORE, Pakistan – Authorities in Pakistan are currently investigating the fatal shooting of a man previously cleared of the killing of accused Indian spy Sarabjit Singh in a Lahore prison back in 2013. The victim, identified as Amir Tamba, was a key suspect in Singh’s death, which had heightened tensions between India and Pakistan – two nuclear-armed South Asian rivals.

Tamba, along with another individual, had stood trial for the murder of Sarabjit Singh but were ultimately acquitted in 2018 due to a lack of substantial evidence. The recent shooting incident occurred in Lahore, where gunmen entered Tamba’s residence, fatally shooting him before fleeing the scene on a motorcycle.

Deputy Inspector General of Police in Lahore, Ali Nasir Rizvi, confirmed the incident and mentioned that Pakistani army and intelligence officials quickly responded, relocating Tamba’s body to the city’s Combined Military Hospital for further investigation. While a case has been registered against the unknown assailants, authorities have yet to disclose a possible motive for the attack.

The death of Amir Tamba received limited coverage in Pakistani media, contrary to swift reporting by Indian news outlets. Notably, the deceased Sarabjit Singh was convicted of espionage in Pakistan in 1991 and tragically died in a prison altercation in 2013.

Embroiled in ongoing tensions, both India and Pakistan have traded accusations of intelligence involvement in a series of incidents on each other’s soil. Despite global scrutiny, including accusations from the United States and Canada, India has consistently denied any link to alleged assassination plots.

As investigations unfold into the fatal shooting of Amir Tamba, questions persist regarding the complex relationships and historical animosities between India and Pakistan, underscoring the delicate nature of geopolitical dynamics in the region. Efforts to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice are underway, as authorities navigate the intricate web of espionage and intrigue that continues to shape relations between the neighboring nations.
