HAMMOND, La. — A shooting in the Willow Villa community has left one person dead and four others wounded, including a young child. Authorities arrested a suspect in connection with the incident, which unfolded just before noon on Thursday.
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office reported that the confrontation began as a verbal dispute and escalated into gunfire. Marquanivus Jones, the alleged shooter, faces multiple charges, including second-degree murder and attempted murder. Javan Myers, 26, was killed during the exchange of gunfire.
Among the injured is a four-year-old child, whose condition has not been disclosed, but officials stated the child has since been treated and released from the hospital. The identities and conditions of the remaining victims have not been made public at this time.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with gunshots piercing the usually quiet neighborhood. Chief Gerald Sticker urged community members to seek non-violent resolutions to disagreements, emphasizing that no argument deserves such a violent outcome. He stated that the investigation aims to uncover the circumstances that led to this tragic event.
Residents expressed shock at the violence, reporting a generally peaceful atmosphere in the region. Many recounted hearing the gunfire and experiencing fear, with neighbors gathering to discuss the incident’s impact.
The sheriff’s office continues to gather information as part of its investigation, but shared that the series of events reportedly began after a request for a ride triggered the argument between the involved parties. The community is left grappling with the consequences of what has been described as an unacceptable escalation of conflict.
As law enforcement works to address the situation and provide answers to the affected families, the broader issue of gun violence remains a pressing concern in many communities across the country.
