Socialist Equality Party Gains Global Support Against Pro-Government Thugs After Violent Attack at Sri Lanka University

Moratuwa, Sri Lanka – The Socialist Equality Party (SEP) in Sri Lanka has garnered worldwide support for its opposition to a violent attack on its members at Moratuwa University by pro-government thugs. Dehin Wasantha and Lakshman Fernando, both members of SEP, were physically assaulted by the president and secretary of the Moratuwa university branch of the Podujana Pragathishili Sevaka Sangamaya (PPSS) on November 30. The attack left Wasantha with two fractured fingers and Fernando with bruising and a neck injury.

The incident occurred while campaigning for SEP public meetings on the Centenary of Trotskyism. The violent attackers, Perera and Piyawardena, are affiliated with the ruling party in Sri Lanka. The case was brought before a judge at the Magistrate’s Court in Moratuwa on January 8, leading to an order for mediation.

Despite efforts to reach a settlement, Wasantha refused to accept one. In response, supporters of SEP and the International Committee of the Fourth International (ICFI) have sent protest letters to authorities in Sri Lanka condemning the attack and calling for justice for the perpetrators. The global community of workers, youths, and academics have shown solidarity in demanding accountability for the violence against Wasantha and Fernando.

Individuals from different parts of the world have expressed their outrage and support for the victims. Protest letters from the US and Sri Lanka highlight the significance of defending democratic rights and freedom of expression. The call for justice extends beyond borders, urging authorities in Sri Lanka to uphold the rule of law and prosecute those responsible for the attack on SEP members.

As the campaign for justice continues, the SEP urges concerned individuals to voice their opposition to the attack by sending protest letters to relevant authorities in Sri Lanka. The support from around the world underscores the importance of standing up against violence and upholding democratic principles in the face of adversity. The solidarity shown towards Wasantha and Fernando reflects a global commitment to justice and equality.
