Bhubaneswar, India — Following a violent incident at a local bar, authorities are intensifying scrutiny of nightlife establishments in the state capital. The Excise Department has announced that it will launch a comprehensive review of all bars and pubs, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy toward unruly behavior from bouncers.
Excise Superintendent Debashish Patel outlined the department’s plans during a recent press briefing, stating that regular raids will now be conducted across the city. He highlighted a significant shift in enforcement, declaring, “The era of operating bars late into the night with loud music and large, uncontrolled crowds is coming to an end.”
The decision for these stringent measures was prompted by an altercation that broke out at the OD 02 bar in Kharavel Nagar on February 14. Following a tip-off, authorities confronted a crowd of nearly 100 patrons inside the bar at approximately 2 AM. When officers attempted to enforce the law, they were met with hostility from both bar staff and patrons, allegedly aided by bouncers. In the aftermath, bar manager Avinash Sahu was arrested, and an official complaint has initiated an ongoing investigation.
Patel underscored that only licensed and officially recognized security personnel will be permitted to work in bars. He expressed concerns about unauthorized bouncers, stating, “These individuals have increasingly emerged as a law-and-order issue. We cannot afford to have individuals with criminal backgrounds overseeing public safety.”
In collaboration with local law enforcement, the Excise Department plans to conduct raids that will further ensure compliance among nightlife venues. Police directives already advise establishments to transition from bouncers to verified and accredited security staff to maintain a safer environment.
The explicit message from authorities is clear: nightlife regulations in Bhubaneswar are set to become more stringent than ever before. This crackdown aims not only to ensure the safety of patrons but also to uphold the integrity of the city’s social environment — an initiative that has become especially pressing in light of recent events.
As this enforcement initiative unfolds, bar and pub owners are being urged to comply with new regulations to avoid potential legal repercussions. The focus on nightlife safety reflects broader concerns regarding public order and the safeguarding of community spaces across the city.
Community members are also keeping a watchful eye on these developments, hoping for a balanced approach that promotes both safety and enjoyment within the nightlife scene. The ongoing cooperation between the Excise and Police departments signifies a concerted effort to maintain a vibrant yet secure atmosphere for all residents and visitors.
