Tacoma man stabs his sober living house roommates then sets the house ablaze

TACOMA, WA – Residents of a sober living home in Tacoma are recovering after a night that began like any other but ended in terror, when one housemate allegedly turned violent, attacking fellow residents and setting a fire that left one man fighting for his life.

Just before dawn on Tuesday, authorities responded to a distress call from a home on South 34th Street, where several men were living as part of a structured recovery program. At the center of the chaos was a resident who, according to officials, had only moved in days earlier but whose mental health had appeared to decline rapidly.

According to court records, one of the victims woke in the early morning to the sounds of shouting and the acrid smell of smoke filling the air. In a panic, he raced toward the cries for help and discovered one of his fellow residents engulfed in flames—a harrowing scene that would stay with him long after the fire was out.

That man, authorities said, was fully ablaze by the time emergency responders arrived. His injuries—classified as critical—required immediate medical attention as firefighters struggled to contain the blaze and rescue the remaining residents trapped inside the home.

Investigators believe the suspect used several mattresses and a pile of clothing to ignite a fire at the base of the staircase, an action that appeared designed to block escape for those who slept upstairs. The fire quickly spread, leaving several residents with few options but to flee through windows.

As the flames tore through the living room, another resident managed to jump from an upstairs window to safety, narrowly escaping the spreading inferno. The quick-thinking actions of these survivors likely prevented further loss of life, officials said.

Three men were transported to a local hospital, two with less-severe wounds and the third in critical condition due to burns sustained during the incident. Family members and housemates were left reeling, shaken by the violence that shattered the sense of security in their recovery community.

Authorities later located the suspect—a 29-year-old man—at a nearby convenience store. He reportedly had matches and a lighter in his possession, along with a cut on his hand. According to officials, when questioned about the cause of the fire, he simply smiled.

Prior to the attack, the suspect’s father had contacted law enforcement after receiving alarming messages from his son, who claimed he was about to harm others. This tip may have aided authorities in their swift response and in apprehending the suspect soon after the incident.

The suspect was arrested and has been charged with multiple counts, including attempted murder and arson. He is currently being held on $1 million bail and has entered a plea of not guilty.

The community continues to rally around the victims, especially the man who suffered the most serious injuries. The incident has underscored the vulnerabilities of those seeking recovery and raised questions about supporting residents who experience mental health crises.
