Ten Bells Pub, Spitalfields: Located near the Jack the Ripper Murder Scenes, Put Up for Sale Due to Bankruptcy

London, England – The Grade II listed Ten Bells pub in Spitalfields, London has been put up for sale after its owners faced financial difficulties, marking the end of an era for the infamous establishment. Believed to be the pub where Jack the Ripper’s victims Annie Chapman and Mary Jane Kelly drank before being killed on the streets, The Ten Bells has long been a stop on East End walking tours.

The pub’s history has been intertwined with the gruesome legacy of Jack the Ripper, with the establishment even trading on its notoriety and calling itself The Jack the Ripper during the Seventies. However, following the Reclaim The Night movement, its identity was changed to the one it has today.

The pub’s notoriety as a haunt frequented by the serial killer is just one aspect of its dark history. Nearby locations, such as Brune Street, where the Ripper’s last victim was murdered, and The Happy Days Fish and Chip shop where the killer left a bloodstained apron, add to the chilling atmosphere surrounding The Ten Bells.

The opportunity to purchase the historic pub has arisen due to financial difficulties faced by the East London Pub Company, which was put into administration last year. The Ten Bells is part of a portfolio of famous pubs owned by the company, with others including The Gun, The Saxon in Clapham, and The Lock Tavern in Camden also up for sale.

This marks the end of an era for The Ten Bells, as a new chapter awaits for the historic establishment with its fate hanging in the balance due to financial struggles. The notorious pub, infamous for its ties to Jack the Ripper’s victims, has become a piece of history up for grabs in the heart of London’s East End.
