Tragedy Strikes in Ondo: Violence Erupts During APC Ward Congress, Leaving Two Dead and Many Injured

Idanre, Nigeria — Violence erupted during the All Progressives Congress ward congress in Ondo State on Wednesday, resulting in at least two fatalities and multiple injuries. The event, intended to elect ward executives across the state’s 203 wards, was disrupted by what are believed to be political thugs connected to local transport unions.

Reports indicate that clashes broke out in the Idanre Local Government Area when armed individuals, arriving in several vehicles, stormed the congress venue, dispersing attendees and election officials. Eyewitnesses noted escalating tensions as rival factions contested delegates’ lists and executive positions, which quickly turned physical before gunfire was exchanged.

Among the injured was Raphael Adetimehin, the younger brother of the state party chairman, Engr. Ade Adetimehin. He sustained severe injuries during the attack and remains in a coma at a private hospital. Eyewitnesses described the chaos as thugs targeted the chairman initially, only to shift their aggression toward his brother when their primary objective failed.

“The situation is tragic,” Engr. Adetimehin said, confirming that his brother was attacked. “These thugs were instructed to target me, but they settled for Raphael instead, inflicting serious harm.” He lamented the disruption, emphasizing the impact on the democratic process within the party and the wider political landscape.

Local law enforcement was quick to respond, with police and security officials deployed to restore order. Led by Commissioner of Police Lawal Adebowale and the Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Oluyemi Ibiloye, teams worked to disperse the attackers and stabilize the situation.

The violence was notably pronounced in Iju/Ita Ogbolu, a ward in Akure North Local Government Area, where skirmishes further delayed proceedings. Police spokesperson DSP Jimoh Abayomi confirmed that five individuals were injured and a vehicle was set ablaze in the turmoil, in addition to the two deaths reported.

Abayomi issued a statement detailing the incidents, which led to two fatalities, with their bodies transported to a local morgue. He assured the public that an investigation was underway to identify and apprehend those involved in the attack.

In the aftermath, party leaders and community elders condemned the violence, labeling it as a threat to the integrity of the internal democratic process. The PBAT Mandate Elders Forum has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to conduct a thorough investigation into the disturbances, emphasizing the need for accountability to uphold democratic values.

The incident reflects growing concerns about political violence in Nigeria, particularly during election processes. Observers note that such acts can severely undermine public trust and hinder the nation’s efforts toward democratic stability.
