ATLANTA — A community is grieving the loss of a beloved mother who was shot and killed just hours after celebrating her daughter’s birthday. Lareon “Lay Lay” Brown, 26, was fatally injured in a triple shooting early Sunday morning when a dispute escalated into violence, according to the Carrollton Police Department.
Brown’s family described her as a joyful soul who brightened the lives of those around her. “Lay Lay was the backbone of our family,” said her sister, Netorian Crawford. “She had a million-dollar smile and was incredibly down-to-earth. Wherever she went, she made everyone around her happier.”
The tragic incident occurred around 1:30 a.m., mere hours after her family had gathered to celebrate her daughter Zynova’s birthday. The family is now left grappling with the loss of a nurturing mother to three young children. Crawford expressed her heartbreak, stating, “Her children are now left without their mom and our family is seeking answers.”
In addition to Brown, two others were injured in the shooting, including her cousin, Kathy Cheeks. Cheeks, who is currently recovering, confirmed suffering a bullet wound in her leg and described the chaos during the shooting. “I heard her calling someone’s name over and over again. I was running and didn’t look back,” she recounted with tears in her eyes. “I didn’t know who had taken my sister’s life in that moment.”
Authorities have apprehended three individuals in connection with the shooting. Jamine Hutchinson, 31, Zontavious Vaughn, 26, and 23-year-old Cyntez Worthy are facing multiple charges, including felony murder and aggravated assault, as well as unlawful possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
The violence has left a profound impact on the Carrollton community, prompting many to reflect on the devastating consequences of such incidents. In an effort to support Brown’s family during this difficult time, loved ones have launched a fundraising campaign to assist with funeral expenses.
