RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities have apprehended two men believed to be involved in a brutal attack at Concept Restaurant in Richland County last month, officials reported.
Clifton Bookert, 37, and Michael Alexander James, 23, were detained by law enforcement on charges related to their participation in the assault on March 16, 2025, which resulted in significant injuries to a victim who was later admitted to a local hospital.
The Richland County Sheriff’s Department responded to an emergency call from the restaurant around 8:00 p.m. the night of the assault. First responders found the victim had been attacked by two assailants and sustained several injuries. The suspects had fled before deputies arrived at the scene.
To aid in the apprehension of the attackers, surveillance video capturing the assault was released to the public on April 3. Prompted by the footage and subsequent public exposure, Clifton Bookert surrendered to authorities later that day. Bookert is now facing charges of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. He was initially booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center but has since been released.
Days later, on April 9, the Sheriff’s Department succeeded in identifying Michael Alexander James as the second suspect through ongoing investigations and the spread of his image via news outlets. Following public appeals, James too turned himself in to face similar charges as his alleged accomplice.
The community has been urged to provide any more details that might help further the investigation. Authorities are actively encouraging anyone with additional information to come forward and contact the Richland County Sheriff’s Department or to submit tips anonymously through Crimestoppers.
The swift arrests following the community’s cooperation with law enforcement underline the crucial role that public assistance plays in solving crimes. Local police have reaffirmed their dedication to maintaining safety and security, emphasizing that community engagement is essential to effective law enforcement.
Meanwhile, residents of Richland County have been left shaken by the violence at a well-known local gathering spot, leading to increased calls by community leaders for more proactive measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
The ongoing investigation continues to develop as authorities process evidence and evaluate further witness testimony, crucial steps toward ensuring justice for the victim of this senseless act of violence. This case also highlights the continued need for vigilance in public spaces, echoing broader societal concerns about safety in communal areas.
