UNLV Security Footage Reveals Campus Officer’s Heroic Actions in Deadly Rampage

Las Vegas, Nevada – Newly released video footage from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, reveals the harrowing moments of a deadly rampage that took the lives of three professors and left another severely wounded in December. The footage includes images of a campus police officer bravely confronting the gunman outside a building, ultimately putting an end to the 10-minute terror unleashed by the 67-year-old former business professor from North Carolina.

The gunman, identified as Anthony Polito, was equipped with a legally purchased 9 mm handgun, nine bullet magazines, and a target list of names. However, none of the individuals shot were found on this list. The university recently made public 20 hours of surveillance footage from campus security cameras and officer body cameras, along with over an hour of 911 call recordings made to campus police during the tragic incident.

The horrifying sounds of gunshots resonated through the university campus, prompting panic and chaos among students and faculty members. In response to public records requests, Adam Garcia, the university Vice President of Public Safety, expressed the difficulty of reliving the tragic events of that fateful day while introducing the released materials to the public.

One particular recording captured a distraught father reaching out to 911, having received a message from his daughter who was hiding in a classroom. The dispatcher confirmed an active shooter on campus but assured the concerned parent that police were already on the scene and advised the daughter to remain in a safe location.

In the midst of the chaos, video footage shows campus security officers rushing into the building where the shooting occurred, while Las Vegas police swiftly arrived on the scene. The gunman, dressed in a black trench coat, was observed calmly making his way towards the business school building from a nearby parking lot.

Amidst the tragedy, officers were seen rendering aid to a severely injured professor who managed to exit the building before collapsing behind a patrol car. UNLV President Keith Whitfield provided an update on the professor’s condition, noting that he was steadily recuperating through rehabilitation efforts.

Las Vegas police’s thorough investigation, including the release of video and audio recordings, highlighted the meticulous efforts of law enforcement in ensuring the safety of students and faculty members on campus. Although this incident took place just miles away from the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, the authorities confirmed that the gunman acted alone, bringing a sense of closure to the community after the distressing event.
