Vermont Detectives Grapple with Surge in Homicides and Mysterious Deaths in October; No Arrests Made Yet

MONTPELIER, Vt. – Detectives in Vermont are facing an overwhelming surge in homicides and suspicious deaths during the month of October. According to Vermont State Police Maj. Daniel Trudeau, the number of cases in October alone is unprecedented, putting significant pressure on the investigative teams.

As of Monday, there have been six homicides and one suspicious death in Vermont in the past month. This spike in criminal cases has left detectives fatigued and working tirelessly to solve each case. Despite the challenges, Trudeau expressed confidence in the ability of the state police to allocate resources efficiently and manage the high caseload.

To support the Criminal Division, troopers in the Field Force Division have been crucial in providing assistance with various investigations, including untimely deaths, low-scale robberies, and burglaries. The collaboration between different units within the state police highlights the collective effort to address the rise in criminal incidents.

The recent homicide cases include the fatal shooting of a man found in the woods in Plainfield, identified as Jeffrey Caron, 42, of Barre. Another case involves the deaths of two missing men from Massachusetts, whose bodies were discovered in a wooded area in Eden. In addition to these incidents, two individuals were killed in separate shootings in Wheelock and Newport Town.

Trudeau emphasized the complexity of the investigations, involving crime scene examinations, witness interviews, and digital evidence collection. Vermont State Police are urging anyone with information related to these cases to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigations.

In total, Vermont has seen 20 homicides in 2023, including the cases from October. None of the October cases have resulted in an arrest, and state police do not believe the incidents are connected. The efforts of law enforcement are focused on resolving each case individually, while working to ensure the safety and security of the community.
