Violence Against Shopworkers in Scotland Doubles in a Year According to New Report

Glasgow, Scotland – Retail workers in Scotland continue to face a growing epidemic of violence, as revealed by a recent report. The survey, conducted by the retail trade union Usdaw, highlights a disturbing trend of shopworkers experiencing violent attacks, threats, and abuse on a daily basis. According to the report, nearly one in five shopworkers in Scotland were victims of violent attacks in 2023, a significant increase from previous years.

The survey of over 5,500 retail staff showed that incidents of violence have more than doubled in the past 12 months, with 18% of shop workers reporting being physically attacked. Additionally, nearly half of the workers surveyed reported being threatened by customers, while 70% experienced verbal abuse. These alarming statistics underscore the dangerous environment that many retail workers face while simply trying to do their jobs.

Shopworkers across Scotland recounted harrowing experiences of being pushed, punched, grabbed, sworn at, spat on, and even assaulted with objects like bottles. The incidents often occurred when workers had to enforce age identification rules or refuse to sell alcohol, leading to aggressive outbursts from customers. Many workers described feeling shaken and fearful of returning to work after such traumatic events.

Paddy Lillis, the General Secretary of Usdaw, expressed concern over the survey results, emphasizing that no one should feel afraid to go to work. The findings also shed light on the prevalence of retail crime, which has contributed to the increase in violence and abuse against shopworkers. Lillis called for more robust protections for retail staff and highlighted the need for stronger legislation to address the issue.

The report’s findings echo similar reports from industry organizations, which have documented rising levels of violence and abuse against shopworkers. The British Retail Consortium and the Association of Convenience Stores have both raised alarms about the escalating threats faced by retail staff, as well as the significant economic impact of theft and security measures on the industry.

In response to the concerning trend, Usdaw has advocated for stronger measures to protect shopworkers and deter criminal behavior. The union has successfully campaigned for the implementation of a protection of workers law in the Scottish Parliament, but stresses that more must be done to ensure the safety and well-being of retail employees. Usdaw looks forward to collaborating with law enforcement agencies to address the issue and create a safer working environment for shopworkers across Scotland.
