Gulfport, Fla. — A local man is in custody following a violent altercation on Friday night that left his mother and stepfather injured. Police allege that 43-year-old Jorge Polo assaulted both family members, culminating in a brutal attack that involved a stabbing with broken glass.
According to the Gulfport Police Department, officers arrived at the scene around 8:58 p.m. in the 6300 block of Pasadena Point Boulevard South. Upon arrival, they found Polo’s stepfather with serious cuts resulting from the confrontation.
Investigators reported that Polo shoved his 68-year-old stepfather into a table, breaking the glass and using the shards to stab him multiple times. The situation escalated further when Polo allegedly attempted to gouge the man’s eyes. When his 67-year-old mother intervened to protect her husband, Polo reportedly threw her to the ground.
Both victims were transported to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital for treatment of their injuries and have since been discharged. Fortunately, their injuries, while serious, were not life-threatening.
After the violent incident, Polo fled the scene. Officers were able to apprehend him shortly after, though he resisted arrest. He now faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, domestic battery, and two counts of battery involving an elderly person.
Authorities have expressed their concern regarding the escalation of domestic violence in the area. They urge anyone experiencing similar issues to seek help and report their situations.
