Violent Incident at Penticton Boardshop Sparks Concern for Downtown Safety

Penticton, BC – A downtown business owner in Penticton, BC is expressing concern and frustration after a violent incident at his shop, which he believes is indicative of a larger issue in the area.

Rob Burnett, the owner of Freeride Boardshop, located on Main Street, reported that one of his employees was assaulted by a person who entered the shop intoxicated and became aggressive. This incident is just one in a series of troubling events that have occurred in the downtown area, including a recent assault on the owner of Ogo’s Ice Cream Shop, located nearby.

According to Burnett, the assailant had displayed concerning behavior earlier in the day, attempting to use a stolen debit card to purchase a skateboard. Later, the individual returned to the shop and proceeded to smash a glass bong, injuring one of the employees by hurling the shards at them.

The victim, Grayden Portman, required hospitalization and stitches for the injury. “It’s just kind of the reality of what it’s like, working in downtown Penticton, regardless of the business,” Portman stated, reflecting the pervasive sense of unease among employees in the area.

Burnett expressed that while this incident was particularly violent, it is far from an isolated occurrence. He also highlighted his concern for the safety of his young employees and called for action from city council, the provincial government, and other authorities to address the underlying issues contributing to these incidents.

As a result, Burnett called for increased law enforcement presence and better access to mental health and addiction services in the area. He believes that greater accountability within the justice system is necessary to deter criminal behavior and protect the community.

The ongoing threat to the safety of downtown businesses and their employees underscores the urgency for meaningful reform and proactive measures to address the root causes of these incidents.

In Penticton, BC, the call for improved safety measures and support for businesses and employees remains paramount, as the community grapples with the repercussions of recent violent events. These incidents highlight the need for comprehensive solutions to address the underlying issues and ensure the safety and well-being of residents and business owners in the area.
