Violent Morning in Columbia: One Dead, Three Injured in Elmwood Park Shooting Amid Ongoing Police Investigations

Columbia, South Carolina — A shooting in the Elmwood Park neighborhood has left one person dead and three others injured, prompting an investigation by the Columbia Police Department (CPD). The incident occurred early Friday morning and is part of a broader series of violent events reported in the city.

Police responded to a call regarding a car break-in at approximately 5:15 a.m. at a residence on Lincoln Street. As officers were en route, the situation escalated to reports of gunfire nearby. Upon arrival, they discovered two men and two women had been shot, with one male victim succumbing to his injuries shortly thereafter. The three other victims were promptly transported to a local hospital for treatment.

During a press briefing, Columbia Police Chief W. H. “Skip” Holbrook reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat to the community, though he noted that a suspect — believed to be armed and dangerous — fled the scene. “We do not have information suggesting there was a specific target,” Holbrook said, emphasizing the investigation’s focus on tracking down the suspect.

In a separate incident earlier that same day, police announced the arrest of a 53-year-old man in connection with a fatal shooting at S. Bar and Grill on Garners Ferry Road. Just after midnight, officers responded to a report of a brawl in the bar’s parking lot. During the scuffle, a 33-year-old employee, identified by the Richland County Coroner’s Office as Wendell F. Sholar, was shot and killed.

Bernard Jackson Jr., who was at the scene, was taken into custody and faces charges of manslaughter and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. The CPD continues their investigation into both incidents, seeking information that may lead to further arrests.

Residents of Columbia are on edge as officials work to ensure safety and gather details surrounding these violent occurrences. Community members are encouraged to come forward with any information that may assist law enforcement in their efforts.

As investigations unfold, city officials are striving to reassure the public, emphasizing their commitment to upholding safety and preventing further violence. The department will continue to provide updates as they become available, hoping to bring clarity to the situation for residents and families affected by the recent events.
