Warning Travelers to Colombia: Avoid Online Dating Apps to Prevent Suspicious Deaths, U.S. State Department Urges

The U.S. State Department has issued a travel advisory for Americans visiting Colombia, warning them to exercise caution when using online dating apps in the country due to several “suspicious deaths” involving U.S. citizens. Throughout the final months of 2023, eight U.S. citizens were reportedly killed by involuntary drug overdoses or suspected homicides in the Colombian city of Medellin.

Authorities have expressed concern that the deaths may be related to the victims’ use of online dating apps, which led to incidents of robbery, drugging, and violence. The State Department stated that criminals often use dating apps to lure victims to public places such as hotels, restaurants, and bars, where they are then assaulted and robbed. Officials also noted an increase in such incidents, particularly in major cities like Medellin, Cartagena, and Bogota.

The U.S. Embassy in Colombia has reported a significant rise in thefts and violent deaths of foreign visitors, with most of the victims being U.S. citizens. However, many of these crimes often go unreported as victims may feel embarrassed or choose not to pursue legal action. According to the Tourism Observatory of the District Personnel of Medellin, thefts against foreign visitors in Colombia increased by 200% in the end of 2023 compared to the previous year, while violent deaths of foreign visitors increased by 29%.

As a result of the concerning safety issues, the State Department has placed Colombia under a Level 3 “reconsider travel” advisory, citing the high levels of violent crime and terrorism in certain areas of the country. In light of these warnings, officials have offered safety tips for travelers using dating apps in Colombia, urging them to exercise caution and prioritize their personal safety. These tips include meeting strangers only in public places, informing a friend or family member of their plans, and not resisting robbery attempts as it could increase the risk of harm.

The alert from the State Department serves as a reminder for Americans planning to travel to Colombia to be vigilant and cautious, particularly when using online dating apps. As the safety of U.S. citizens remains a top priority for the government, travelers are advised to stay informed of potential risks and take necessary precautions to protect themselves while abroad.
