Zambia: Donor Generosity Saves Starving Dogs and Donkeys in Crisis-stricken Region

Lusaka, Zambia – As 2023 came to a close, there was an outpouring of support from donors that made a significant impact on the lives of countless animals globally. Contributions helped in the rescue of numerous street dogs and cats from hunger, abuse, and disease, as well as in the vital mission of saving hundreds of drought-stricken donkeys.

In Lusaka, Zambia, street dogs fight daily for survival, battling hunger, disease, and the cruelty of humans. Partnering with the Cactus Foundation, efforts have been focused on providing essential food, veterinary care, and shelter to dogs saved from abuse and the illegal dog meat trade. However, with over 360 rescued animals currently under their care, much more assistance is required.

Your support enabled the provision of life-saving food, medical care, and safe shelter to numerous rescued animals at the Cactus Foundation. The impact of these donations has been life-changing for these dogs, offering a ray of hope in the face of desperation.

In Cape Town, South Africa, a deadly outbreak of the canine distemper virus has devastated the Vrygrond community, leaving countless dogs in agony. This outbreak, coupled with cases of severe starvation, mange, and injuries from dog fights and gang-related stabbings, has presented immense challenges. Recent funds enabled the purchase of vaccines to combat distemper, treatment for mange, and general veterinary care for severe injuries and infections. The support provided has made a significant difference in saving lives, such as that of Nova, a puppy suffering from untreated mange and a secondary infection.

In late November, efforts were directed to addressing a devastating drought in Matabeleland, Zimbabwe, which left 300 donkeys on the brink of starvation. Your unwavering generosity allowed for the urgent delivery of hay and feed, sparing hundreds of donkeys from imminent death.
