Aggravated Murder Charge Added for Driver Responsible for Officer’s Death in Rutland Tragedy

RUTLAND, Vermont – Tate Rheaume, charged initially with negligent operation and eluding police resulting in death, now faces more serious charges, including aggravated murder, according to the Rutland County State’s Attorney’s office. This new charge, carrying a mandatory life sentence without parole, adds to the already significant legal consequences Rheaume is facing, with a maximum potential sentence now reaching 65 years.

The charges stem from a tragic incident in July where Rheaume, fleeing from police after a break-in, collided with a cruiser driven by 19-year-old probationary Officer Ebbighausen. This marked a devastating moment as it was the first time a city police officer had been killed in the line of duty in Rutland. Rheaume’s reckless actions, such as driving at high speeds in a low-speed zone and intentionally veering into oncoming traffic, have only worsened the gravity of the situation.

Out on $100,000 bail, Rheaume is set for an in-person arraignment, with the State’s Attorney pushing for him to be held without bail. The severity of the charges reflects the magnitude of the incident, especially considering Rheaume’s attempt to flee the scene and the tragic consequences that followed.

The community is in mourning for Officer Ebbighausen, a promising young officer on the verge of full certification, as they come to terms with the profound impact of this tragic event that has deeply affected the city. The loss of a dedicated public servant has left a void in Rutland, highlighting the dangers that law enforcement officers face every day while carrying out their duties to protect and serve the community.

As investigations continue and legal proceedings unfold, the Rutland community is united in honoring Officer Ebbighausen’s memory and seeking justice for the events that transpired. The case has brought to light the risks and challenges that law enforcement officers confront, emphasizing the need for accountability and the responsibility that comes with operating a vehicle safely to prevent further tragedies.
