Assault Guilty Plea: Tyler Greening Faces Sentencing Hearing in August

St. John’s, Newfoundland – An 18-year-old individual named Tyler Greening, from Paradise, has admitted to aggravated assault in connection with a brutal attack on a high school student in St. John’s last year. The victim was viciously beaten by a group of students, including Greening, in an incident that occurred at the entrance of Prince of Wales Collegiate in March. The assault resulted in severe injuries to the victim, prompting legal action against the perpetrators.

Greening, represented by his lawyer, entered a guilty plea during a court proceeding, paving the way for a sentencing hearing scheduled for August 29. The court mandated a pre-sentencing report to be conducted to gather information before determining the appropriate sentence for Greening. Additionally, four other individuals involved in the assault, who are minors and therefore cannot be identified, also pleaded guilty to their roles in the incident.

Following their guilty pleas, two of the minors received 18 months in juvenile detention, while the other two were sentenced to 24 months – the maximum penalty for a charge below murder involving a minor. However, a publication ban has been imposed on the case, preventing the details of the assault from being disclosed until after Greening’s sentencing.

The incident at Prince of Wales Collegiate sparked outrage and raised concerns about safety and violence in schools. Authorities and educational institutions have been urged to address issues of bullying and violence among students to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. The community is awaiting the outcome of the sentencing hearing to see justice served for the victim and accountability upheld for the perpetrators of this heinous act.
