PERRY, Iowa – A recent school shooting at Perry High School in Iowa has left the community in shock as new details emerge of the gunman’s activity prior to the attack. The 17-year-old gunman, Dylan Butler, reportedly had an active account on the internet chat platform Discord where he discussed school shootings and appeared to have signaled his intentions just moments before the shooting. The attack resulted in the tragic death of sixth grader Ahmir Jolliff, 11, and injuries to four other students and three staff members, including principal Dan Marburger, before Butler died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Law enforcement is investigating Butler’s use of social media, including Discord, in the lead-up to the shooting. The minutes before the shooting saw Butler posting a video to TikTok from a school bathroom and using the username “tooktoomuch.” Additionally, a Discord spokesperson confirmed that the account “took2much” was believed to belong to Butler and had posted about the upcoming shooting.
Screenshots of messages from the account on Discord revealed alarming details, including the user’s state of mind just before the attack and the use of derogatory language. The discovery of Butler’s involvement in a chatroom dedicated to discussing school shootings and the subsequent reporting of this information to the FBI has raised concerns about the role of online platforms in potentially inciting such acts of violence.
In light of this tragic event, Discord has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against content that glorifies violence and violent extremism, expressing cooperation with law enforcement in their investigation. This incident echoes previous cases where online platforms were used by individuals involved in violent acts, prompting a reexamination of the responsibility of tech companies in monitoring and reporting potentially dangerous behavior.
The FBI’s response to the flagged chatroom and Butler’s online activities, as well as previous instances of violence connected to online platforms, underscore the importance of proactive measures to prevent and address potential threats. As the Perry community mourns the loss and grapples with the aftermath of this senseless act of violence, it also highlights the need for continued vigilance and collaboration in addressing the complex intersection of technology and public safety.
