Firefighter Injured in Los Angeles Gas Cylinder Explosion Fully Recovers Home

Los Angeles, California – The last firefighter injured in a natural gas cylinder explosion near the Port of Los Angeles has been released from the hospital, marking a milestone in his road to recovery. Dan Goen, who sustained serious injuries on February 15th during a response to an auto fire call in Wilmington, is now back home recuperating.

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) reported that the incident unfolded when they arrived at the scene to find a semi-truck without a trailer attached engulfed in flames. The truck, which ran on compressed natural gas and was equipped with two 100-gallon tanks, posed a significant hazard to the firefighters on site. During their efforts to contain the fire, one of the tanks exploded with tremendous force, resulting in injuries to nine members of the LAFD.

Some firefighters were thrown several feet and experienced temporary loss of consciousness as a result of the blast. However, their fellow crew members acted swiftly to assist those more severely injured. Over 150 firefighters responded to the scene, demonstrating their dedication to ensuring public safety and effectively managing the emergency.

After being treated at Los Angeles General Medical Center, Goen expressed gratitude for the support he received both from his colleagues and the medical team at LA General Medical Burn Center. Fire Chief Kristin Crowley commended the bravery and selflessness displayed by the LAFD members in prioritizing public safety above their own well-being.

Chief Crowley affirmed that all injured firefighters are progressing well in their recoveries, following her personal meetings with each of them. The investigation into the incident continues as authorities work to determine the circumstances that led to the gas cylinder explosion.
