Jersey, United Kingdom – A local supermarket employee who launched a violent stabbing attack on his manager has been ordered to undergo indefinite detention at a mental health facility, authorities said.
Trevor Green, 56, faced charges of attempted murder and grave and criminal assault in what emerged as a grievous case before Jersey’s Royal Court. Green pleaded not guilty, but extensive court proceedings revealed alarming details about the incident that transpired during a routine managerial meeting in November 2023.
Details unfolded in court highlighted a disturbing scene where Green attacked Katarzyna Czochara, 35, stabbing her 16 times in the neck and upper body. The assault was so severe that Czochara went into cardiac arrest and sustained life-altering injuries.
The court issued a special verdict where Commissioner William Bailhache mandated Green’s detention. Alongside his confinement, stringent restrictions and a restraining order were also sanctioned. During the hearing, it was noted that the duration for Green’s treatment remains uncertain, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of his violent tendencies which the court deemed highly dangerous.
In a poignant victim impact statement, Czochara expressed ongoing fears of being attacked again. Despite her gratitude for surviving the harrowing event, she conveyed feelings of anger and deep sadness due to the trauma experienced.
Inspector Lawrence Courtness, the senior investigating officer in the case, spoke to the media after the proceedings. He described the attack on Czochara as “shocking and unprovoked,” highlighting the physical and emotional toll it took on her and her family. “Kasia and her family continue to grapple with the traumatic events of that day and the severe injuries that nearly claimed her life,” Courtness detailed.
Further emphasizing community safety, Courtness reassured the public that this incident was an isolated one, underlining the rarity of knife crimes on the island. He praised the resilience and cooperation of Katarzyna and her family throughout the investigation and subsequent legal processes.
The decision to detain Green is not static; the ruling can be revisited and potentially amended by the court dependent on assessments of his mental health and perceived threat level. For now, the order stands firm, placing public safety and Czochara’s well-being at the forefront of judicial priorities in this unsettling case.
