KINGSTON, N.Y. — A 55-year-old man has admitted to felony assault in a disturbing case from June 2024, in which he struck a woman with a hammer after she rejected his advances, according to the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office.
William Knox Jr., a registered sex offender, entered his plea on September 29, just as jury selection was set to begin for the trial. Officials confirmed that Knox, who has a long record of violent behavior, is currently being held without bail at the Ulster County Jail.
According to prosecutors, the assault occurred in the early hours of June 19. After initially approaching the victim on Broadway, Knox became aggressive when she declined his advances. Authorities described how Knox followed the victim on his bicycle before dismounting to confront her directly. As she attempted to evade him by crossing the street, he pulled a hammer from his waistband and launched a brutal attack, striking her repeatedly in the head.
After the victim collapsed, Knox fled the scene on his bicycle, discarding the hammer into a storm drain. It was recovered later by local police. Officers on routine patrol quickly discovered the victim, who was bleeding and in evident pain. She identified Knox, leading to his swift arrest nearby by state police.
Following the attack, the victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was released later that day. District Attorney Emmanuel Nneji praised her bravery, emphasizing the importance of her immediate cooperation with law enforcement. He stated that her actions, along with the swift response from police, were crucial in preventing further violence.
Knox faces a sentencing date of December 19, where he is likely to receive a prison term of 12 years to life as a persistent violent felony offender. Prosecutor Cindy Murphy is handling the case with support from her assistant, while Knox is represented by Stephen Barry.
This incident underscores ongoing concerns about violence against women and the critical role of community vigilance and prompt reporting in addressing such crimes.
