Moscow, Russia – A horrifying mass shooting at a concert hall in a Moscow suburb left at least 60 people dead and 145 others injured, according to Russian authorities. The attack, carried out by a group of armed men, is considered one of the deadliest in Russia in recent history.
Videos circulated online show masked men entering the Crocus City Hall and firing shots, with one using an assault rifle. Another disturbing video depicts armed men chasing and shooting at a group of people at close range. The chaos escalated when a grenade or incendiary bomb was thrown, sparking a fire at the scene.
The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack, adding another layer of complexity to the tragic event. Among the casualties were three children, as reported by the Moscow region branch of Russia’s Health Ministry.
Response efforts were led by Moscow region Governor Andrei Vorobyov, who arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting. Special forces and riot police were deployed, as firefighters worked to tame the flames engulfing the concert hall.
Escaping through the theater basement and seeking refuge on the hall’s roof, around 100 individuals managed to survive the ordeal. The band performing that night, Piknik, fortunately remained unharmed.
In the aftermath, Russia’s Investigative Committee opened a criminal terrorism case, signaling the gravity of the situation. President Putin expressed his concern for the wounded victims, while Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin vowed to assist those affected.
Global condemnation poured in, with world leaders denouncing the attack and offering solidarity with the victims. Efforts to provide aid, such as blood donations, showcased the community’s resilience in the face of tragedy. The incident highlights the ongoing threat of terrorism and violence in the region, underscoring the need for vigilance and security measures.
