North Fort Myers, Florida – A couple with opposing political views had been dating for 25 years without tying the knot, but their disagreements took a violent turn according to Florida investigators.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call from the couple’s residence on Wednesday after an argument escalated, leading to one partner grabbing the other by the neck and strangling them. The incident occurred in North Fort Myers, approximately 125 miles south of Tampa.
Authorities reported that it was the “Democrat” partner who reached out for assistance after enduring a day filled with heated arguments over political differences. The altercation intensified as the “Republican” partner allegedly began verbally attacking their significant other, ultimately resulting in physical violence.
The victim detailed the frightening encounter, recounting how their fiancé had placed their hands around their neck during the dispute, making it difficult to breathe. Despite pleas to stop, it wasn’t until the victim’s 70-year-old partner released their grip that the altercation came to an end.
Law enforcement officers observed red marks on the victim’s neck consistent with strangulation, supporting the victim’s account of the attack. When questioned, the suspect admitted to engaging in a political argument but denied any physical altercation took place.
Subsequently, the suspect was taken into custody and charged with domestic battery by strangulation following the deputy’s assessment of probable cause. This was not the first encounter with the law for the suspect, as they had been previously arrested at their residence just 10 days prior for assaulting a neighbor and making threats with a weapon.
