Subway Station Terror: Attempted Rape Arrest Made in Queens

New York, USA – A 21-year-old woman was the victim of a terrifying ordeal in a Queens subway station back in February, as reported by authorities this week. The incident involved an attempted rape and assault inside the 169th Street station in Jamaica. Donovan Simmon, 19, was apprehended on Tuesday afternoon and now faces charges of attempted rape, unlawful imprisonment, assault, and lewdness in connection to the distressing attack.

The victim, identified as Jamileth, disclosed to ABC 7 Eyewitness News that she was traveling home on an F train after completing her night shift cleaning offices. She recounted how she noticed a man staring at her after she woke up from resting her eyes on the subway car. As she tried to exit at 169th Street, the man blocked the doors while carrying out a lewd act.

Despite attempting to ensure her safety by waiting on the platform after both disembarked the train, Jamileth encountered the man waiting for her at the mezzanine level. The situation escalated as he followed her to a secluded area within the station, where he physically attacked her in an attempt to remove her clothes. Jamileth fought back, screamed for help, and was fortunately rescued by a security guard who intervened and frightened off the assailant.

In the aftermath of the harrowing incident, Jamileth shared how the experience has left her constantly on edge and fearful for her safety. Her bravery in fending off the attacker highlights the trauma survivors of such assaults endure. The victim, who recently immigrated to the US from Ecuador, sought medical attention for her injuries and transitioned to working day shifts for her well-being.

Simmon has a history of past arrests for offenses including robbery, public lewdness, and fare evasion, underscoring the importance of addressing systemic issues of violence and safety in public spaces. In light of the incident, resources like crisis counseling hotlines are available to support individuals who have experienced sexual assault, emphasizing the need for comprehensive support services in communities.

Authorities continue to investigate the case, aiming to provide justice for Jamileth and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The resilience and courage displayed by survivors like Jamileth serve as a reminder of the importance of addressing and combating violence against women and vulnerable populations in society.
