Violent History: Man Accused of Murder in Lurgan Last Year Refused Bail Due to Ongoing Court Case

Lurgan, Northern Ireland – The bail request of a man accused of the murder of Odhrán Kelly was turned down. The 31-year-old suspect, Shane Harte, appeared before Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday on charges related to the killing of Mr. Kelly, whose body was discovered near a burned-out car in Lurgan on December 3, 2022. Five individuals, including Harte, have been charged in connection with the incident.

A police detective revealed that a visit to a block of flats in the area of the burnt-out car led to the discovery of a “horrific scene” and evidence of a “horrific attack”. Further investigation led to the arrests of the individuals accused in connection with the murder. Harte allegedly visited the flats on multiple occasions on the night of the murder, and his movements were reportedly tracked through CCTV evidence. The detective also cited concerns about Harte’s potential to commit further offenses and his likelihood of absconding.

The defense argued that the evidence against Harte was not substantial and that there were others granted bail in the case, suggesting that the objections to bail were unwarranted. However, the judge ultimately denied the bail application, stating concerns over Harte’s history of violence, potential flight risk, and evidence suggesting interference with the course of justice.

The case is set to be heard again in early March. This decision comes as a reminder of the complexities and challenges in the legal process and the impact on all individuals involved. It also highlights the efforts of law enforcement and the court system to ensure a fair and just outcome in cases of this nature.
