YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Lt. David Godfrey, who sustained injuries in a September shootout in North Codorus Township, has been transferred from WellSpan York Hospital to WellSpan Surgery & Rehabilitation Hospital as part of his recovery process. His medical team reports that he is making steady strides in his rehabilitation, focusing on regaining his strength and working toward walking independently.
Each day, Godfrey undergoes therapy aimed at enhancing his mobility. Hospital representatives shared that the rehabilitation team is committed to supporting his recovery, with hopes he will be able to leave the hospital in the coming weeks, contingent on continued improvement.
In a show of resilience, Godfrey made his first public appearance since the incident at a K-9 spaghetti fundraiser dinner for the York County Sheriff’s Office. The event, hosted at the York Fairgrounds, raised funds for the department’s K-9 unit, reflecting Godfrey’s long-standing dedication to these programs.
The gathering also served as a memorial for the three officers who lost their lives during the September shootout — Detective Sergeant Cody Becker, Detective Mark Baker, and Detective Isaiah Emenheiser. The tragic incident occurred when officers were responding to serve a warrant related to stalking and trespassing at the residence of the suspect’s ex-girlfriend’s mother.
This shootout resulted in the death of three law enforcement officers and left two others wounded, casting a somber shadow over the community. Godfrey, a certified master trainer with the National Association of Professional Canine Handlers, has been recognized for his unwavering support of K-9 programs within the force, emphasizing the crucial role these units play in law enforcement.
The community continues to rally around Godfrey and his family, offering encouragement as he navigates the challenges of rehabilitation. His commitment to serve and protect, even in the face of adversity, remains an inspiring example for many.
As Godfrey progresses through his recovery, his presence at community events highlights the strong bond between law enforcement personnel and the community they serve. The upcoming weeks will be critical in determining the next steps in his rehabilitation journey, which he faces with determination and support from both his family and colleagues.
