Goodale Sentenced for the Murder of Nohema Graber: Family Seeks Healing After 25 Year Sentence

DES MOINES, Iowa – Barbara Graber, the former sister-in-law of murder victim Nohema Graber, expressed hope that the recent sentencing of Jeremy Goodale, one of the convicted killers, to at least 25 years in prison will provide her family with some closure. Goodale and his accomplice Willard Miller pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the death of Nohema Graber, a Fairfield teacher who disappeared in a park in 2021.

Graber’s body was found hidden under a tarp and wheelbarrow shortly after her disappearance. Goodale and Miller, both 16 at the time, were arrested based on statements Goodale made to friends on social media. Goodale later confessed that Miller wanted to kill Graber because he was failing her Spanish class and feared he would not be able to go on a study abroad trip.

While Miller was sentenced to life in prison, Goodale received a 25-year prison term. During the trial, the court heard from numerous members of Graber’s family, who expressed feelings of pain and anger, but also offered forgiveness and encouragement for Goodale. Despite feelings of anger and bitterness, some family members stated that they will be praying for Goodale.

When Goodale addressed the court, he apologized to Graber’s family, acknowledging the irreparable harm caused by his actions. The judge, while acknowledging the severity of the crime, also noted Goodale’s remorse and challenging home life and mental health struggles.

Goodale’s attorneys declined to comment after the hearing, while the Jefferson County Attorney expressed belief that Goodale’s 25-year minimum sentence with the opportunity for rehabilitation represents justice. The family expressed satisfaction with the sentence and appreciation for the work of the prosecutors and judge, emphasizing the need for support in the wake of the loss.
